It’s been an interesting season for Tottenham’s prodigious midfield star Dele Alli.
After finishing last term as the PFA Young Player of the Year, some reduction in form seemed inevitable and that’s exactly what happened in the opening stages of the campaign, as the England international mustered up just three goals in his first 15 Premier League outings – including a run of seven games without finding the net.
Some questioned whether Alli had the ability to cope with the extra emphasis opposing defenders were now placing on him, whilst the ‘one-season wonder’ tag was also naively bandied about.
But Alli ended that dry spell with a blast of five goals in January alone, the joint-most of any Premier League player alongside attacking accomplice Harry Kane, whilst also laying on one assist. Accordingly, the 20-year-old was EA Sports’ Player of the Month for January.
So what inspired such a turnaround? A change in mindset, approach, tactics or position? Speaking to EASPORTS.com, Alli said…
“I was getting frustrated as I was getting into the right positions to get goals and assists but it just wasn’t happening, and then it seemed to just click over night and I started putting them away. I was grateful to finally start getting some goals.
“Obviously I was working on my finishing because when you go a few games without a goal you can start to lose your confidence in your finishing and you start wondering why it’s not working out. I just kept working hard in training on my finishing and thankfully the goals started coming.”
