England boss Roy Hodgson spoke with both Brendan Rodgers and Steven Gerrard before selecting Andy Carroll for his England squad this week for the friendly with Italy in Switzerland and is calm over the strikers form.
Liverpool’s record signing seemed on his way out of Anfield last month with new Liverpool manager Rodgers seemingly dismissing him from his plans, but after rejecting a move to Premier League new boys West Ham; it seems Carroll is set to stay on at Merseyside.
Hodgson felt the need to contact both manager and captain at the club before selecting the £35million man in his England squad after a summer of speculation surrounding the player.
“I checked Andy out with Brendan Rodgers and Steven Gerrard because I realise there is a situation there,” said Hodgson.
“They were both happy with Andy in training and the way he is going about his business.
“We have to accept that a lot of our front players aren’t first choices at their clubs.
“There are a lot of foreign centre forwards at the big clubs in the Premier League so it’s not easy for our boys sometimes.
“But Andy Carroll did well when he played in the Euros and I have no worries putting him in this squad.”
