Scottish giants Rangers have held talks with Premier League outfit Southampton about the possibility of Ross Wilson moving north of the border to take a Director of Football role in Glasgow, BBC reports.
What’s the word?
Struggling to keep pace with runaway leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premier League and also sitting nine points behind Aberdeen in the standings, Rangers have a lot of work to do if they are to claw their way back to the summit of Scottish football once again.
Mark Warburton’s departure earlier this month has led to a period of transition at the Ibrox, with Rangers looking to create a new role for a Director of Football at the club as well as appointing a successor to Warburton.
Rangers’ top-target for their new role is Southampton’s Director of Scouting Ross Wilson and discussions have been held with the Premier League side.
Who is Wilson?
In charge of scouting at Southampton, Ross Wilson’s position should say enough. His most recent involvement came with Manolo Gabbiadini’s switch from Napoli to the Saints, which has certainly been a hit.
The 34-year-old has worked tirelessly behind the scenes at Southampton for a number of years and Rangers want to give him a more senior position with the SPL side, which would see Wilson play a much more direct part in proceedings.
What’s been said?
Whilst an official approach isn’t believed to have been made, discussions have been held and Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger refused to rule-out the possibility of an exit for Wilson when speaking to TalkSport:
“For us, it’s always a compliment. People always seem to want to come to us to look at our personnel. It’s part of our daily oxygen that we have. I spoke to Ross last week and we had lunch together and he’s very committed and excited to stay with us. But for us, we never believe that everybody needs to stay with us forever.”
“When you grow as a club, people will come, people will go and at the moment Ross Wilson is an important part of our group and seems committed to where we are moving. It’s a compliment to our football that we are getting looked at, at all different levels. But there has been no talks there yet.”
